New Series...Water's Edge

LynnWelker.com
"My Art is not about what I see but everything I have seen and can imagine."

A new series has been brewing in my mind for quite some time. Over the past couple of years,
while visiting our western National Parks, I have been drawn to the movement, color, and texture
of various bodies of water and the borders around them. After collecting many inspirational
photographs from Zion's Virgin River, Yellowstone's Lake and Snake River, I have begun to
reflect, reconsider, and expand my concept of water and its edges. Below are the photos that
have inspired the first painting of the series, "Winter Pond".

Grand Teton National Park in June

LynnWelker.com

On the way to Jackson, WY, gazing at the Grand Teton mountain peak soaring to 13,770 feet, I couldn't resist recording the rich splendor of the valley for a future painting. The water at the edge of Jackson Lake was covered in chunky ice after an unusually harsh winter. Herds of bison with their new-born calves grazed in open areas throughout the park.

The July 7th Laguna Beach First Thursday Art Walk was the busiest so far this year. The Festivals and Pageant had opened which made the evening busy with warm and welcoming activity. It was definitely the place to be on the coast. Sandstone Gallery's doors were open for all who came to see the best contemporary art on Gallery Row. Below are some pictures of guests at my show and a peek at the art.
View these works and more at LynnWelker.com.

The show continues through August 1st.

Gallery Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. daily and Tuesday by appointment.

VISIT TO JACKSON HOLE GALLERY

LynnWelker.com

Even though the weather was wet and windy, I was able to get some good photos for this latest video of Vertical Peaks Fine Art as well as the surrounding area. The scenery driving through Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP made it difficult to keep our eyes on the road. The vistas changed constantly from frozen lakes, to mountains covered with snow with roadside snow banks 12 ft high, to the richest  green valleys with grazing herds of wild bison and horses. Here is what we saw while driving down from 10,000 ft. into the snow melt and rain drenched Teton valley to Jackson, WY.

I hope you enjoy this latest YouTube video by
clicking on the link below.

Here is one of the paintings hanging in Vertical Peaks Gallery.
The theme incorporated in this contemporary painting on paper was inspired by the plentiful population of bison in SD and WY.

REPRESENTATION AT PRAIRIE EDGE

On the corner of 6th and Main in downtown Rapid City, Prairie Edge stands two stories high and stretches out for half a block. The brick, wood and glass storefront have been restored to its original 1886 construction when it opened as a dry goods store which eventually became a rowdy cowboy saloon. Prairie Edge opened its doors after renovation in 1993 to showcase six galleries: Fine Art, Plains Indian, Books & Music, Trading Co, Italian Glass Bead, and Sioux Trading Post.

Inside, the hardwood floors and polished cabinetry bring to mind the spirit of the Old West,
while the soft sound of a Lakota flute evokes the mystique of the Great Plains Indian.

The works of regional and nationally acclaimed artists are on display in the second floor
Fine Art Gallery. Please enjoy this video of my paintings, Prairie Edge and its surrounding
attractions and landscape.

TRAVELING TO SOUTH DAKOTA AND WYOMING

We'll be traveling most of June for pleasure as well as two stops for my art business. The first week will be spent with our son and his wife in Rapid City. Each summer we visit Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Hill City and Custer State Park. There is so much to do and see in that part of the state.

Entrance to the area's most awesome attraction

Art Alley in downtown Rapid

I have an appointment to meet with the gallery director at Prairie Edge Fine Art Gallery in downtown Rapid. I'll be showing and submitting abstract landscapes as well as new representational oil paintings for consignment. I hope she likes them enough to hang them in the best gallery and shop in town.

Trip to Wine Country in Northern CA

Even though I love the rich greens and repetition of rows in the vineyards, my excitement is aroused when visiting the Jack London home and grounds near Santa Rosa. The buildings and structures are composed of materials from the earth. I love the texture that surrounds you while in that setting. I will visit there next week and bring home more photos for painting reference and inspiration.    Lynn
